“The Classroom Garden”

Mrs. Houchard’s third grade class use classroom lessons to develop a school garden.  Many aspects that students learn in the classroom apply to their garden.  Principles of math and responsibility are two major applications.  The principles of math are used when they measure the perimeter of the garden plot, the number of rows, space between rows, and the number of seeds.  The development and care fall into the hands of all the students.   The students feel an ownership of the garden.  Helping the plants grow is good for the kids in many ways, said teacher Tamara Houchard, who helped the fifth grade class start a garden at Bowman Middle School a few years ago.  The students appreciate the garden and are looking to harvest a wonderful crop this summer.
