Deyton Elementary School

Spring has brought many new and exciting learning experiences to Deyton Elementary.  Students in Third Grade had the opportunity to travel to Gatlinburg, TN to visit the aquarium.  Bette English’s class traveled to the Colburn Earth Science Museum in Asheville, NC to expand their knowledge of basic electricity and magnets, and rocks and minerals.  The Spring is also a time for our students to showcase their musical talents.  The Fifth Grade presented their spring performance of Beach Party 2007 on April 5.  In preparation for the May performance of The Jungle Book, the Fourth Grade students have completed auditions for leading roles.  Thanks to the Toe River Arts Council, Deyton students have had the opportunity to spend time each day for a week with storytellers Jacque Redleaf and Arlene Broyles.  The Deyton Media Center will be having a spring book fair, April 23 – 27, to make sure the students have plenty of reading material for the summer months.  The Deyton Elementary Chorus will be traveling in April to participate in the Carowinds Music Festival and are working diligently in preparation for the second annual dinner show in May.  Thirty-five 4th grade students participated in the annual Young Authors competition and the three winners were Daniel Hollifield, Madison Spurling and Michael Woody.  Faculty members and students are also raising money to support Relay for Life.

Buladean Elementary

On Wednesday, May 23, Buladean students celebrated another successful year by participating in Field Day at their school.  The school rented four gigantic inflatables that included a baseball game, a maze, a jumping pit, and a slide.  The children were able to play on these inflatables after lunch was served.  Also, the teachers served fruit punch and bubblegum flavored snow cones and ice water to the students.  This Field Day was a great way to celebrate good grades, great behavior, and over-all success throughout another wonderful school year.

 Tipton Hill

On April 2, Tipton Hill eighth graders joined the other eighth graders of the county and traveled to the Outer Banks.  On the first day, students visited Kitty Hawk and the Wright Brothers’ memorial.  They also made their trek up the largest natural sand dune on the east coast, Jockey’s Ridge.  On the second day of their trip, the students visited Cape Hatteras lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in the nation.  They also journeyed across the waters on a ferryboat to Ocracoke Island and saw the lighthouse there.  That night  everyone sat down to dinner and enjoyed a show by Captain Blackbeard himself.  The third and last day, everyone traveled to Roanoke Island and visited the Roanoke Island Festival Park.  There they got on board the Queen Elizabeth II and learned about the Legend of Two Path.  On the way back home, they visited Somerset Plantation and got a realistic view of 19th-century life on a large North Carolina plantation.
