Dropout Prevention/Distance Learning/Alternative Learning Programs

Both the distance learning programs and the alternative learning programs are designed to address the dropout issue in Mitchell County.  The programs are meant to provide an alternative to dropping out for students.

The distance education program consists of primarily three segments.  These are Apex Learning, North Carolina Virtual Public Schools (NCVPS), and North Carolina Learn and Earn Online (LEO).

Apex Learning is an online program whereby students may take classes for credit (9 weeks) or course (18 weeks) recovery.  These classes are aligned with the NC Standard Course of Study.  Students will, under the supervision of a facilitator, proceed through the courses in order to receive credit for classes for which they may have, for whatever reason, failed to receive credit previously.  The courses are self-paced and have regular assessments throughout.  This program may also be utilized for assistance with regular classroom instruction.

NCVPS is a program that, like Apex Learning, allows for students to participate in an online environment.  The difference is that this program is actually directed by an instructor from a remote location.  The student and instructor interact via email.  There is a local facilitator present with the student to insure security and to deal with any potential problems.  NCVPS sets the beginning and ending dates and reports all scores to the LEA.  Like Apex Learning, this program is aligned with the NC Standard Course of Study.

LEO is also a program directed by the Department of Public Instruction that allows for high school juniors or seniors to take online classes so as to receive both high school and college credit.  Mitchell County Schools primarily uses the UNCG I-School for this purpose.  Students may choose from any classes offered and are guided by a college instructor from the college of choice.  Again, all progress and grades are reported to the LEA.

The alternative learning program consists of the temporary placement of certain students in a more controlled environment.  Typically these students have not achieved success in the regular classroom and are generally considered to be “at risk” of dropping out of school.  The alternative learning program provides both a certified instructor and teacher’s assistant who facilitate a regular curriculum involving a combination of both online and regular instruction.   Assessment is done at the conclusion of each semester to determine if the student is ready to be placed back in the regular classroom environment.  The three primary factors utilized in determining placement are discipline, academics and attendance.  These students, in addition to the regular curriculum, are involved in several enrichment activities, which may include special sessions conducted by various county professionals.
