groundbreaking ceremony

The groundbreaking for the new Mitchell Elementary and Middle School was held today at noon. The site is located across from the Mitchell County Central Office in Ledger. Plans have been underway for 8 years and are expected to reach completion in 2025.  This is the first new school for Mitchell County in 22 years.  Speaking at the event were Mitchell County Superintendent Chad Calhoun, NC State Senator Ralph Hise, Mitchell County Manager Allen Cook and Kim Hodshon of Mitchell County Schools. The school will combine Bowman and Harris Middle Schools and Deyton Elementary and part of Gouge Elementary and will be known as the “Mitchell Miners”.
