Today we enjoyed a visit from North Carolina State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Mo Green. We shared the challenges we have faced with Hurricane Helene as well as our goals moving forward. We appreciate Mr. Green visiting Mitchell County and look forward to working with him as he leads public education in our state.

Hurricane Helene: This is Our Story Submission by Laura Cole Band and Music Teacher, MMS "What Came With Helene: Destruction, despair, desolation, death. What Came After Helene: Hard work, struggle, sweat, Tears, thanksgiving, Hope, joy, Families coming together, Neighbors helping neighbors, Strangers becoming friends. Our beautiful little mountain communities may look different, but we are strong, mountain people. Our ancestors fought to survive here and we can be proud of who we are and where we came from. We will rebuild together. Our communities will be beautiful again because they are already beautiful from within ourselves. There are no words to express the deep gratitude that we all have for everyone from near and far who has shown concern, prayed, sent donations (whether monetary or in the form of food or supplies), those who have showed up to cut down trees, knock on doors, and lend a hand in any way possible. We will never forget what you have done for us."

Dear Mitchell County Schools Community: We are aware that rumors are circulating concerning the cybersecurity breach of information maintained by PowerSchool. Here is the most up to date information that we have: PowerSchool has not provided us any information that individual student or staff Social Security Number information was taken in the breach. In the event that any individual information was taken, PowerSchool carries a legal obligation to contact the affected individual directly to inform them. We understand that PowerSchool will offer free credit monitoring, credit freezes, and other surveillance for signs of identity theft to anyone who was directly affected. We will continue to provide information on this matter as we receive it. In the meantime, please refer to our January 14 memo available at https://www.mcsnc.org/article/1964136 for more information.

📢 Attention Parents and Guardians! We’re conducting a survey with our high school students to better understand their internet access at home. The information gathered will help us identify and assist students who may need support, including providing T-Mobile hotspots to those without reliable access. 💻 What You Need to Know: The survey will be conducted during school hours. If you do NOT want your child to participate in this survey, please call the school to opt-out. Your input is invaluable! If your child is participating, we encourage you to discuss your household’s internet and cell service with them to ensure accurate responses. Here are the questions (mostly multiple choice) that will be on the survey: Do you have reliable internet access at home? If yes, what type of internet connection do you have at home? Have you experienced any challenges with internet access at home? How often do these challenges affect your ability to complete schoolwork? How would you rate the cell service/signal in your home? Would having a T-Mobile hotspot improve your ability to complete schoolwork? If provided with a T-Mobile hotspot, how often would you use it for school work? Is there anything else you'd like us to know about your internet or cell service needs? Together, we can help bridge the digital divide and set our students up for success! Thank you for your cooperation.

National Law Enforcement Day
Mitchell County Schools will be closed today, Thursday,January 9. More snow fell overnight in our county and there are also areas of black ice with the refreeze. This will be classified as a remote day for students. MCS understands with all the days we missed due to Helene we need to be back face to face instruction. However we cannot put our students and especially our student drivers at risk. MCS has made adjustments to the calendar and have added more student days after the Helene disaster. We are also asking the Department of Public Instruction for funding for extended learning for parents who wish for their child attend this summer. We do understand this puts hardship on parents and childcare is hard to find. We are also looking for grant funding to provide childcare on snow days.
